Yes, we are definitely at risk of a Mad Max future. I’m struggling to be positive yet, as you say, the means of creating a new and much sustainable future is there for us to do or fail to do. Mad Max is the current path. While I strongly support something like UBI the exact nature of this needs to be determined. The limited UBI pilots to date have shown that the things you fear don’t really happen but the data is too thin to have any confidence. I would like to think that people will simply start doing the things that they can and want to do except for the ones who can’t or won’t and they will always be with us. At least in this form they won’t be motivated to steal for a living. I’m particularly taken with the idea of Universal Basic Assets but this is much more difficult to move to as the basic assumption is that we all own a basic share in the planetary assets that support our economies. This is more like having capital assets providing an income rather than redistribution of wages.
