Yes, it was called “yellow journalism” in the 1890s when Hearst used it to help justify the invasion of Cuba and the Philippines in the Spanish American War. The difference is both quantitative and qualitative when amplified by social media. Propaganda was usually identifiable through the 20th century by the government linked channels distributing it. We were just overwhelmed in the US by an infinite range of DIY propaganda channels hence a new name: Fake News.
