Yes, Everything Mostly Remains the Same
Trump is frantically tweeting but fewer and fewer people care
by Mike Meyer
I was hoping for a new topic but the American collapse is on schedule. The Trumpian hail Mary with William Barr and his four pages flying through the air was an incomplete pass. He seems to have eaten some sod on landing and lost his reputation, such as it was.
But that is looking as if it is a lesser injury as memories of Nixon’s AG, John Mitchel, being indicted for perjury and other crimes, is now an active topic of conversation. One does wonder where they get these senior attorneys who are so easily convinced to lie like a rug and ruin a forty year career for another criminal asshole. John Mitchel was, himself, a major asshole but Barr seems to have kept the image of a normal only moderately disgusting political stand in. That is now gone thanks to his entanglement with Trump.
The completion of the two year investigation by Mueller’s close lipped legal team has released some of them from employment. That, of course, allows them to begin to talk about Barr’s trashing of the massive report and decision to ignore the prepared summaries included with it as he went for the full white wash.
That was obviously a bad call although it was ignored by our national media who can be counted on to blow almost anything if it requires thought. The urge to parrot whatever nonsense comes out of the potato holes of ‘official’ people without checking gave Donald a short victory lap.
The Donald, as always, blew it by by claiming ‘complete exoneration’ that only worked with his drooling howlers in a closed arena. Even Barr couldn’t say that making all the other things he didn’t say appear all the worse.
The subpoenas coming from the House and the new breed of serious Representatives, the first in two generations or more, are dragging the Democratic leadership, previously noted for forfeiting every game they were in, out of their hidey holes and on to the field. This will result, courtesy of our national media, in a conflict and challenge, win or lose setting. This is true happiness for them because they can simply quote both sides with no need to think.
This, incidentally, suggests that automation of news media is no problem as mindless repetition with no understanding is the current form. In fact there may be real improvement with full automation as the AI devices would have access to huge amounts of fact and capability to simply flag lies, idiocy, and ignorance. Wow, what a concept. It could be transformative.
The emerging assumption is that the fight over the Mueller Report, Trunp’s tax returns, and the endless list of investigations now in New York Southern District should paralyze Trump and his cohort until 2020. That is dangerous though not unexpected. Counting on criminally insane people to act in their own self interest is not a rational position. We will see how fast this goes and, as a result, how fast the leaks of Trump’s returns and pieces of the Mueller Report begin.
My feeling is that this is being carefully planned, politically, to tease the most outrageous pieces at select intervals this year if the subpoenas go too slowly. That could be really fun as the Donald descends farther into delusion and dementia in Twitterdom. Again, this is a play from the old political game book but this is not the old political game.
It is again obvious that the ignorance, incompetence, crime, and corruption of Trump, his family, and the unfortunates who hooked their decrepit little red wagons to him is far too large to cover up. Unfortunately the extremity of the situation is reaching dangerous levels.
With ever louder and wilder threats, Trump cannot stop from making a terrible situation worse. The reported line of federal workers from the White House volunteering to help the House committees bring this thing to a halt is actually encouraging. Their fear at what may happen to them should frighten us all.
So, everything is as it was but the wheels on Trump’s toy truck are ever more wobbly. Unfortunately there are no ideas on how to replace this piece of junk before it kills us all. I suspect that when it finally falls apart the wreckage will just be left at the side of the road and we’ll try then to figure something new out.
