Yes. But the key is no one can admit it. You might be shouted at by a believer. So you say nothing. Once the tipping point is reached it moves very fast. People miss the changes. Something that people could say was bad but what can you do? Quickly becomes something else entirely and no one reports it.

Just as in one comment here. They only knew the “camps” were for unaccompanied children. But now children are forcibly torn from their parents. And put in cages in centers that US Senators are forbidden to enter.
