We seem to fighting a battle against the forces of medieval ignorance and arbitrary domination. How did that happen. People holding beliefs in support of that are either insane or hypocritical as they seek power without regard for anything but totally selfish ends.

How do we deal with that without being pulled into the same world of active oppression? There are evil belief systems and any belief system is subject to evil manipulation.

Any belief system that is based on faith and denial of scientific knowledge will, I’m afraid, need to be controlled as a disease vector. But that is the road to hell.

This is very much a matter of public health and social psychosis. I’ve come to think that the least that is required is to legislate that such belief systems, if held, should prevent anyone from holding a public position of trust.

A person can choose to believe something but there are public consequences of professing that belief. This is no worse than any oath of office although that doesn’t do much for people who are willing to lie for their own ends. The oaths sworn by all Senators today won’t stop most of them from accepting lies and supporting Constitutionally criminal actions.
