Totally correct. I would only suggest an alternative metaphor for the destruction of the republic. It is not flames consuming the republic, at least not yet, but termites eating the foundation and walls of the republic. It is possible to ignore the destruction as everything appears to be still in position. Just don’t look too closely or the piles of dust and holes appearing in the framework become obvious. And it is everywhere.

If flames do appear they will consume everything in a flash as there will be nothing solid left. Paper thin walls that will collapse at a touch. The solid support for our daily lives will suddenly collapse. Why didn’t we see this? And there will nothing left to repair or to build on.
