This piece was written back in early April and Joe had not, yet, heard the call. The rate of national collapse, very much like being condemned to execution has focused his mind.

He needs to get this right. But on a positive note, age and experience have made his own limitations very apparent. I know the feeling hence his very serious work on vp selection.

I think he also sees and wants his memory to be that he selected for the future. He will not build the future but open the door and begin the detailed process.
