This is really important. We need to recover this while we regain control of our avaricious instincts that have been destroying the planet for two centuries or more.
Yes, we are close in age as I remember having breakfast in the summer and being told to come back by dinner. We lived on a farm surrounded by other farms owned by relatives, some close some not. Playing was an all-day project.
I either spent time building mud dams in the fields or exploring the nearby woods. When I was ten I talked my father into buying me a paperback book at the drugstore in town. I actually read it. I clearly remember the book, it was The Languages of Pao by Jack Vance, a classic SciFi author.
The novel was an exposition on The Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis that I didn’t learn about until thirty years later but I knew what it meant. Even though I’ve long worked in technology and IT (wonder why?) I’ve been reading and thinking ever since. But all my books are digital so I can carry them with me.
Sheltering in place is no hardship for me. I’m linked to a universe of knowledge. I want my kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids (soon 2) to have the time and confidence to take time to think. What do we really want and what do we really need? And how can we do that?
