This is an interesting post and even more interesting responses. Yes, we have no democracy. The current US political system is in the final stages of collapse into oligarchic rule. The only question is what happens when it goes full authoritarian. I’m betting on it breaking up soon for a number of reasons that I spend time writing about.
It disturbs me to see anyone saying there is any value in the current remnant political parties. The Republican Party has moved into the full radical, wingnut camp and should be declared a criminal organization. As far as I can tell it has not had any identifiable policies since Reagan tried to fly with supply side economics (and I use the word economics very loosely here). The only goal is to remove money from the population and give it to the oligarchy. The creation of a class of people too driven by declining wages and the threat of catastrophic healthcare disaster has produced twenty years of declining education spending. These people will vote anyone who claims to hear them even if he is a Russian controlled side show barker.
The Democratic Party is the new Republican Party. Hilary Clinton ranked internationally to right of most right wing leaders. That means very much for the rich and very much authoritarian. So both parties are effectively oligarchy controlled. There is no party of for the people who make less than $500,000 per year.
The Democrats will let you have a few services if you pay a lot. The Republicans want you enslaved or dead (of natural causes). Is that what you want? I think now but those are the only choices.
We need a completely different form of government that makes no pretense of electing “representatives” that will be bought by the oligarchic elite.
