This is a very good story. The coda is an excellent turning point. I wonder. I remember that summer well as I was a freshman at Butler University in Indianapolis and there were lots of sightings. My girlfriend and I would drive around and find places where people had reported sightings. We’d sit in the car and wait. Nothing happened but I can still remember staring at sky. And I know the midwestern use of setting there.
The underlying force was the nuclear deterrent and the Cold War. We had grown up constantly reminded of the end of the world. This had begun to produce irony to balance the simple belief in horror. Dr. Strangelove and Jane Fonda’s Barbaraela with James Bond. We knew there were things we didn’t know and terrible things we did know. I think I can understand the problem for a Ohio deputy sheriff facing the real unknown.
