The standard reaction to paradigmatic change is over reaction to the nature of that change. Yes, we are in the most extensive paradigmatic shift in modern history but the specifics of that change are very difficult for people to anticipate because our language has not yet achieved a consensus on what is happening. It has become clear that the greatest impact will be in very specific job categories but the greatest impact will be in middle management. These are the bottom rung of professional level, middle class jobs. While skilled crafts, mechanics and technicians will be safer their skills will be continue to use more and more augmentation. Eventually the augmentation will cease to need human involvement. This will be the second wave of change.

Creativity and empathy are the areas that will retain human values for a long time. Empathy is critical to caring for people and is incredibly hard to automate in any meaningful way. But the reality is a steadily growing expansion of technology augmentation focusing more on what people are best at doing.

But now is a good time for truck drivers to learn a more adaptive skill set. The arts are probably the safest but even that is beginning to find the quirky character of ML based productions interesting.
