The Situation Remains the Same
by Mike Meyer
There is tremendous handwringing by Americans and claims of jubilation among official supporters of the Trump regime but nothing has happened yet. This is modern media at its worst as the vast sums of money and stretches of times are spent producing verbiage that describes what I just said in a single sentence.
There is nothing else to say at this point. Trump and his criminal cohort will not escape retribution and there is no reason to think otherwise. This was always understood to be very difficult to accomplish in a failed federal system and probably would not happen. The Trumpite followers are known for boastful claims of victory based on no one being indicted today.
Just to repeat what is known, it has been understood since Trump moved in that there is little likelihood and many reasons to say that Mueller would not try to indict Trump. American law in this area is nearly hopeless as there is no clear means, except impeachment, to admonish a sitting president. Impeachment is actually only admonishment. The problems are structural and planetary.
The revered founding fathers were blessed with several good minds and some excellent ideas from the European Enlightenment but that was all. They struggled to pull a living rabbit out of hat and did but made many major errors. Not all were their fault as the most they could hope for was, perhaps, a hundred years of functional government.
They made it to 86 years before the thing blew up. By brutal force of arms the pieces were put back together in 1865 but the problems and the structural errors were kicked down the road. That deferral, stating it very politely, doomed the US to a rigid constitution as that was all that held the thing together, genocide, slavery, racism, and all.
Only the most massive disasters could be addressed by amendment as the power given to states was not correctable as population and human cultures changed over two hundred years. Slavery was abolished. Women were reluctantly allowed to vote. A president could be removed if that person was bat shit crazy in a way that everyone could perceive as a threat and not an advantage.
The American Constitution became the only sacred object holding a federation of states together backed by force of national arms. That allowed growth and continued genocide with fully institutionalized racism and bigotry included and protected. You didn’t dare change it too much because under the veneer were too much rottenness and the demons would have to be addressed.
Through all of human history until the last 75 years stability and consistency in legal structure for balance of power was the most important thing to have. This was all that could stand between a dangerous person who gained power and wild changes to the political and economic structure.
In a world going through radical social and cultural transformation with technology driven change on a logarithmic scale clarification of fundamental rights with maximum flexibility to ensure access to those rights by evolving people and societies is needed. That never happened in America and does not appear to be possible.
The structure of America and Western Europe worked well once economic growth was able to achieve the proverbial capitalist take off volume. It was, in many ways, self perpetuating while conditions for growth remained planet wide.
Unfortunately the shit has hit the fan and the growth age is past. In fact the consequences of that age are now beginning to kill us. That means that careful tweaking of an 18th century structure has ceased to work. The thing is broken in a profound and tragic way. It was based on the assumption of expansion and growth as some sort of right. Wrong. And the price will be paid.
As people and the planet evolves the costs of maintaining a state with archaic assumptions rise rapidly. Trump and the people who have been suckered into believing complete bullshit embody those costs in America.
A special prosecutor empowered to investigate and report on campaign abuses was never going to address structural problems continuously used to corrupt a pseudo representative system. Trump is only a symptom.
The current noise in the information vacuum pending Barr giving his summary is irrelevant. The noise following that summary I have already written about.
The most valid assumption is that care will be taken to avoid blowing the country up. At the same time the processes have long started that will bring justice down on Trump and his enablers. That will happen in New York courts that are appropriate for a predominantly New York criminal.
It’s really too bad there is no way to handle this at the national level. That would give hope to a failing nation.
But America will continue as will the planet although significant parts of it will probably become uninhabitable in the next fifty years. At that point these issues will be an obscure, historical spot of bother.
