It’s getting closer and it is good. I wish I knew more about it.The dynamics are so complex and the assumptions are so new that there is no small understanding to start from. Getting a toe hold on this mountainous learning curve seems always an illusion. But trajectories are real and direction has meaning. Our new world is a world of intellectual motion, ideas in transition, people in flight. Accepting that and giving up the old idea of destination or solution or finished product seems to bring things closer and make things warmer and better.
Happiness is process and not completion. The right process brings more people in and increases diversity. Surprises are pleasant and even if they are not something is added and learned and people are beginning to find homes in this. But exhaustion is the downside. We are all thinking slowly and that is hard. Perhaps this is evolution, actually, that is exactly what this is. We are being groomed to leave the fast thinking reality and to build stamina for the slow, hard thinking that this new world requires.

Non linear complexity as a normal way of life is daunting. Is even possible? I’m sure that is what this phase change is doing. How it will end up and if we can succeed as a species at this stage of evolution is an open question. Yet even with all of the negative signals and the current death grip of the frightened reactionaries and opportunists, there are so many things beginning to overlap and support the new world. I should say the potential new world. How resilient is this and how resilient are we in breaking away from the old? There is so much to question but so much more to discover in long denied answers to nearly forgotten questions that force to see everything differently.
These folies will be an attempt to map the critical points on the multipath changes that we are experiencing. There is more than enough energy and words focused on the resistance to the reaction and the old who are fighting to turn back time to an era that gave the simple thinkers power. I’ve made a commitment to try to understand the paths that are viable and can lead us to a new order that is not rigid or authoritarian but open and totally based in the power of diversity and change.
So what are the positive reinforcing events, unsuspected changes, alliances, actions that suggesting the future? I’ll try to note them here as well as explore some of the trends that seem, to me at least, as if they are gaining momentum out of sight of the old. This, I hope, will be the basis for conversation and new thinking.
Naming the Old and New
For those of us in or focused on North America and the frightening collapse of the US political system the problem is easily identified, since the tremendous shock of November 2016, as Trump and his despicables. These are now recognized as the resurgence of fascism and feudalism masquerading as nationalism but playing on racism and xenophobia in the counter to diversity and the new. This is entangled in the component failure of neoliberalism and neoconservatism over the last forty years. And this is entangled is the legacy feud between the Mountain and Plain from the French Revolution defining political right and left. This carried the weight of authoritarian rule with authority placed increasingly on the institutionalized forces of capitalism against the revolutionary forces of democratic egalitarianism. While the strongest intellectual force for egalitarianism was Karl Marx that shaped the communalist tendencies of the French Revolution into the disaster of Russian led Marxist, Leninist, Stalinist Communism.
Our political and social language is still caught in this vernacular and cannot escape. While it is openly apparent that a majority of the population in the post-industrial countries recognize the failure of these legacy systems and are appalled at the final disintegration of the conservative political parties, there is as yet no new political language to provide names for the old and to begin to name the new. Naming is a critical stage in change management and this is a profoundly important process in large scale paradigm change. We need new names.
Discussion elements on the old: 1) All systems of politics contain positive components and have been valuable in their time and place. 2) Both capitalism and communism were held in orbit around capital goods as value and centralized currencies, eventually fiat currency, as the means of manipulating the market and the population. 3) We know the basic concept of capitalism requires endless growth and fails at distribution of assets and that climate change is our greatest threat forcing us to find value in sustainability. 4) We are within reach of guaranteed income and universal rights to food, shelter, healthcare, and education. A more egalitarian economic structure moves us to exactly where we know we need to be but this is the opposite of the ‘’traditional’ western political and economic ideals. 5) Happiness is a not a product of capitalism or communism as they are both result wage slavery and intense poverty as the elite exploits distortions in the system. Happiness is, however, what most people want.
The new terms as they are appearing with increasing agreement: 1) Sustainability is both an economic necessity for human survival on this planet and an ethical idea that recognizes the scientific laws of this universe. This is already becoming an ideal for understanding political, social, and economic systems. Endless growth is not sustainable. 2) It is increasingly agreed and understood that our concept of value is changing drastically in a post industrial (post-capitalist, post-communist) world. Intellectual property is the new marker of value. Capital assets need to be positioned as shared assets for all on this planet. Creativity is the creation of sustainable value. 3) Virtual assets and creation of virtual realities will equal or greater value than physical assets tied to to base level reality. This is a major intellectual change and well beyond the ability of many to grasp at this point. 4) The link between intellectual value, virtual reality value, and today’s system appears to be cryptocurrencies and blockchain decentralized contracts. The most reactionary forces are beginning to realize this and attack both cryptocurrency and blockchain technology.
What do we call these things or do we allow them to find their own names and generic identities? I think this is dangerous as the forces of virtualized misinformation are driven by Russian groups as the masters of the most sophisticated propaganda forms in the old world. Those techniques were mildly successful in the old world but have great power in the new world of completely personalized media where authoritarian and immortal groups have freedom to do what they will.
I’m open to suggestions. This is a process of finding a workable term set that we all begin to use and it will be adopted. Now that process needs to be managed or it will by hijacked and turned into doublespeak. This is another thread of discussion.
