The folks under thirty are our last hope. As someone who followed our youthful dictum to never trust anyone over thirty, this is a neat and ironic turn. I’m glad to see the number of vegans in the UK and to see their ages. If we can survive long enough we will survive. That, I’m afraid is becoming a longer shot by the month.

I seem to be seeing more writing apparently determined to chastise vegans and even vegetarians for unhealthy habits. I thought we put that behind us thirty years ago. But it does come back when insanity takes control.

Having been vegetarian for thirty years and finally having eliminated dairy products over the last ten, I don’t think there is any going back. It was difficult thirty years ago and very, very difficult during my first phase of veganism nearly fifty years ago, hence my lapse for a couple of decades.

I’ve been thinking it would be good to add meat to the elimination of fossil fuels as a requirement for any politician asking for a position. And, just to note, I never believed in evangelical vegetarianism. I would eat salad and potatoes and simply ignore the meat rather than complain. But now is a critical time with a new need for plain talk and clear choices on the implications of our diets for all of us.
