That 40% (I prefer to say 30% but that is only hope) is the death of democracy and, in fact, why it has never gotten very far off the ground. The desire, particularly in times of uncertainty, to follow the loudest and biggest shouter is camouflaged by the high jacking of the terminology that we are taught to want. The American use of ‘freedom’ or ‘freedumb’ as it is parodied, is an excellent example. Unfortunately ‘democracy’ and ‘capitalism’ have been substituted for the reality of authoritarian rule and economic exploitation. It helps that the folks who go for this are usually very thin on the history and theory of the concepts and, hence, wouldn’t know democracy if it walked up and bit them on the ass. And in that situation they would, instinctively, club it to death as a dangerous.
