Thank you for the erudite and depressing response. I somehow missed this last month but I did enjoy it. I was particularly taken with the lament for two plus generations that have never known what once was.
This is bad to them because it is criminal, immoral, bigoted and fascist. Those of us old enough to have grown up in at the peak of America have the far greater sadness of knowing that it was once a nearly functional democratic socialist state with some honesty and a few working democratic ideals. It was a racist and misogynist swamp but that had begun to make people seriously uncomfortable. That was not the same as ‘fixed’ but it was a start.
That was all killed after Reagan and replaced with endless greed and the pseudo promise that if you were vicious enough and never worried about anyone else you might, someday, become rich enough to suck the wealth from millions. And there were assholes who believed that and denounced what had once made America respected on this planet.
Now that is so long gone that generations have no memory of it. It is purely an abstract discussion. The norm is idiocy, greed, lies, and ignorance.
