Quite a lot is coming out that shows the problems we’re facing planetwide are caused by what was the middle class. The assumption has always been that expanding the middle class developed diversity and liberal ethics for universal well being and egalitarianism.

While that once was true, it seems to have been more situational at a specific time in history than a structural characteristic of the middle class. The middle class has provided support for fascism when that group felt threatened as they did in Germany, Italy, and Spain in the early 20th century. We’re seeing it now in the US.

I’ve come to think it is, very much, a factor of age that is destroying us. What was the middle class is old and threatened by everything while only wanting things to remain the same. As you note, let the waters rise, they will be dead soon anyway so screw everyone else.

The young are the ones who are losing everything. We need to pay attention to them so that there is a future.
