Perhaps we can get some more people into this conversation. In the end it was H.L. Mencken who was right. Funny how that seems to happen. While I am working to understand the Chinese model it clearly minimizes the representative ideal. The reality now is that we have two working models that have emerged in a time of rapid transition: The new Chinese model that may be dominant no matter what and the EU model that is democratic socialist parliamentary. We’ve watched European model pull steadily ahead of the US over the last twenty or so years but the Chinese model is much bigger and faster. Unfortunately the failure to see the errors back in the ’90s under Clinton, when they clearly reared their very ugly heads, has left nearly forty years of lies and confusion that have poisoned everything. I’m afraid our wounds are mortal. We would have to back up fifty years or so to realign politically and that is nearly two generations. But maybe there’s another route.
