Pandering to the Centrists
by Mike Meyer ~ Honolulu ~ November 11, 2019
Since the wheels have seriously started to come off the Trump Party bus, the billionaire, corporate, and financial folks are suddenly seeing reality and it scares the shit out of them. They are now calling in chits with tame media people to warn of the danger of changing anything with or without Trump and the ugly wreckage of the Republican Party.
This is the cause of the sudden spate of national media solemnly announcing, Trump is going to win again because the Democratic Party is making the same mistake! What is that mistake?
To those with a total hold on power now actually changing anything is a mistake. Ok, Trump is a crazy asshole but just remove him and recycle Joe Biden. That will make the aging, isolated, and frightened people in the few Midwestern battleground states happy otherwise they will vote again for Trump.
This mistake was not made before, at least in living memory of the majority of the population. In fact the problems in living memory has been the failure of the Democratic Party to offer anything beyond corporatism but token gestures such as the Obamacare.
This was the abandonment of any hint of democratic government by allowing the authoritarian fringe of the corporatist alliance to gut voting rights and actively repress voters in enough states to allow the Electoral College to be easily manipulated. This did not happen in isolation. The old Republican Party became radical shock troops for the tiny oligarchic wealth class with full acquiescence of the Democrats who became the more humane ‘center’ of the corporatists. In full capitalist political systems only corporation have power and rights to well being.
This is the big illusion being quickly drug out and wheeled around. There is no center in American politics. There is only acceptance of the loss of democratic systems and ideals sacrificed to endless growth and profits.
The ‘voters’ of concern to the oligarchy are tokens that may be used to justify ignoring the majority’s votes. This is the bizarre distortions made possible by the elitist Electoral College in an authoritarian state.
If the future is truly contingent on 3% of the 55% of voters who actually vote in four or five fringe states (that’s actually what we are talking about) because those people don’t realize that it’s over and Trump, as the fat lady, has already sung, we’re totally fucked.
The .5% had better be scared. Having rode the neoliberal gravy train for forty years from rich to billionaire status while the other 95% sucked wind, they have floated above the world of the growing precariat class. The assholes among them gloated at their own greed and ability to create their own reality, the nicer ones shaved some zeros off a few accounts to burnish their, feel good, humanitarian credentials.
Unfortunately, these folks were both lucky and far too successful at buying politicians and playing the late capitalist financial shell game. This is non productive number shuffling in a loaded system that consolidates assets, plays the Wall Street market, and now sucks the life out of societies.
The luck came from the collapse of the two party system that was not anticipated, but should have been, by the writers of the Constitution. When the Democratic Party gave up any pretense of the democratic ghost under Clinton and became the corporatist party there was nothing left but rich, white people that controlled everything. The legislative branch and executive could be controlled by manipulating only a few thousand votes in the most rural and backward states.
By missing the signs that capitalism does not age well, we are experiencing the death of capitalism as the death of the planet. It will do no good at all to pretend that a little bit of civility in the old boys Congress will make the difference. That won’t even wiggle the needle that is pegged on the disaster meter. We need major change and the failure to act on that will produce suffering and death planet wide. It already is.
Predatory capitalism destroys its own society by allowing everything to flow to those who already have everything. Capital then produces more capital. Work does not matter. Wealth becomes capital gains and political control. Own the politicians and the big state pinball machine is so tilted it has left the plain of the ecliptic.
In the US a century of desperate effort to destroy any virtue except greed has left a population permanently programmed to accept debt instead of assets from a lifetime of work. As long as they can ‘buy’ that new truck and read about the glorious wealth of those who will, someday, let then have some, they will vote themselves into negative net wealth in the richest nation on the planet. Oh, that’s right. That is already done.
That ugly reality now frightening our billionaires and their minions, and that suddenly looks very possible, is a massive asset correction and destruction of predatory capitalism. The unjustifiably scary names are Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren but even they are careful to maintain the old system. Who they should really fear are the new generation that understands that they have been thoroughly screwed with no future and the only hope is some form of democratic socialism to reset the planet for wellbeing and have any hope of surviving terminal climate suffering and species death.
The most that Warren or Sanders would do in office is advocate for basic citizen services and a gentle timeline toward sustainability. The gentle billionaire tax would represent a small pinch but it is a start. What needs to happen is so brutal that no one tied to the oligarchy wants to even allow it to be said outside of scientific journals that most people never read. Soon serious asset reallocation and social reorganization will be required when all the gentleness fails but the billionaires are already spooked.
That’s the rub. The billionaires cannot imagine and will not allow anyone else to think of anything but profit on their assets. The majority of the population now understands that we are living on a rapidly dying planet because of that blind focus. There is no wellbeing when you are a climate refugee and particularly if you started with a net negative on the capitalist scale. And that is now a majority of the US population and others in old style predatory capitalist states.
If you’re a precariat you don’t even exist for those worried folks who are facing the horror of a short term slide down to only filthy rich. As has been said, billionaires should not exist. They do not build vast industries that channel wealth to a large middle class. The old US Republican Party and it’s New Democratic Party replacement has worked to do away with that middle class for decades. They have succeeded.
Before someone mentions the few who have actually built industries with workers, please make a list of all of those. Then you can look at the sources of wealth of the US billionaires. 35% earned their money from finance, fashion, and real estate in 2018. The rest was from resource exploitation.
Wealth that is based on exploitation of planetary resources and exploitation of people need to be immediately and completely reconsidered. We have a species terminating problem that is growing exponentially each year. Profits caused this and these folks are desperate to make sure that their profits continue whatever the result.
The stupidity of that position should be obvious unless you obliterate all scientific data on climate change. That, of course, is what many, if not most, of these people are doing. Their trick is to present themselves as the safe, centrists who will save us from the Trump Party by promoting the exact same principles of that party.
Bullshit. This is not 1990 or even 2000. Even the mindless idiots who have become the standard political careerists in the US may be aware that the world has changed very significantly in the last twenty years. Everyone under the age of fifty knows this unless they listen to Fox News. And no one with any sense listens to that except as a check on how bad off we are.
Stupidity does not produce success. Lies don’t suddenly produce truth. Oligarchies do not suddenly become democracies or even republics without revolutionary change. Committing planetary suicide for the benefit of a tiny minority does not produce a bright future.
