Making the best of it . . .
by Mike Meyer
Coming off an extremely enjoyable and quiet Thanksgiving weekend is an excellent opportunity to look at the state of the world with a certain equanimity. Since the pies all gone there is no chance of launching into massive pumpkin loading to counter the equally massive depression from the antics of the idiots who are still in power or, amazingly, have just gotten elected, appointed, or awarded a piece of the loot.
It would have been so nice if our galactic overlords had picked this weekend to clean up this planetary mess having decided that there is future promise here, after all. It didn’t happen but I’m not giving up hope.
In the American Experiment there is no longer any pretense but only massive corruption, white supremacy, fascism and the counting of ever larger numbers of chickens coming home to roost. Chickens seem to be everywhere and, being chickens, they are looking for something to eat. Since they are Trump chickens it is Trumps on which they wish to feed.
I’ve begun to think that the stunning ignorance and stupidity of all things Trump and the people who have bet everything on a Trumpian future, the mere thought of that destroys hope, may result in the very original solution of letting them all be pecked to death by there very own chickens.
Since the chickens and their pecking are metaphorical no blood would be shed but the vision of this happening suggests the real justice that should be delivered. And this may yet happen. Stupid is as stupid does. Damn, that was a brilliant line.
I will only mention Ivanka’s emails. That is a chicken that has come back to peck not only Ivanka but the entire set of propaganda skewers at Fox NotNews. They are struggling mightily with this while the rest of the country watches with a great deal of detachment. They built the cesspool and now find themselves thrown into it by one of their own.
The only concern is that some rural wingnut will decide to save things by shooting something. But what? Who do you blame? The awesome level of dumb shown by a person who has stood on stage for three years while her father and brothers howled ‘lock her up” then proceeding to use her own email account for official federal business beggars the imagination. The fact that she is being considered a ranking federal appointee in order to be in this predicament beggars a whole other part of the imagination.
It would seem that, even with vast ill-gotten gains, that level of stupid deliverers a daily dose of punishment that should be adequate. Unlike Trump’s core hooters and goons most people are reluctant to bring severe punishment down on people who do not have the ability to understand what they have done. That, I think, explains the general distance people are putting on this excluding, of course, the propaganda mill that cannot think of anything to do but shout “Lock her up!” even louder while keeping Ivanka out of sight to avoid confusion.
On the other hand the trick of releasing the legally required national climate change report on Black Friday evening should trigger world court action as a crime against humanity. That is on the order of going into a closet in the back of a crowded theater and recording yourself whispering ‘Fire!” as flames consume the basement. It was done, no one can say that it wasn’t done, we have proof!
That leads to something that I think may be closer than people realize. The global disaster is becoming clearer to most of this planet’s population and the self serving criminality of the once lead nation on the planet attempting to ignore what is happening is a serious crime against humanity. We need to get serious about making efforts to thwart immediate action to correct the carbon load a major felony by all standards.
No, this is not politics. It is our and a vast range of other life’s survival on this planet that is at stake. We need to bring all criminal codes in line with this. We have, we now know, only ten or twelve years to organize planetary action. We may experience a serous break with the laws of physics and specifically the arrow of time if we fail and our grandchildren and great grandchildren focus a whole planet’s worth of hatred and anger backward on us for listening to the gibberish of idiots and financial people. I don’t want to experience that.
If you haven’t read Kim Stanley Robinson’s novel New York 2140 please do so. Interesting characters and an exciting story illustrates what is going to happen if we remain stupid and New York harbor rises fifty feet. Through the novel Robinson does an excellent job of filling in the causes and reasons for the specific coastal disasters that are much worse than what we are looking at now. He kindly doesn’t deal with the death and suffering and vast refugee populations that very nearly destroyed everything in the last years of the 21st century but moves on to the final efforts to eliminate the problem.
He does a brilliant job of clarifying the failure of capitalism and the financial insanity that locked in the disaster and prevented any solution for one hundred years. The solution is simple, and doesn’t take away from enjoyment of the novel, and consists of nationalizing all financial institutions effectively killing predatory and mindless exploitation.
We have the technology to make everything work and to adapt to a drastically different planet. But unless we put political power and all financial management directly in the hands of the people no solution will be allowed. The fiction of wealth needs to be shown for what it is.
I understand why Robinson placed his story as he did to get some distance on the real human problem while outlining the inevitability of the disaster we have brought on our selves. But I think that we will see the full weight of climate change within the next eighty years. And, at this point, I don’t think there is any hope of survival at a level that could succeed and go on.
But people are adaptable. Unfortunately people act too slowly and then tend to act too violently on the poor dumb shits who think they are in control and cause the disaster.
But there is still hope that our galactic neighbors may come and clean things up for us before it is too late. We are seriously working our way into the most desperate long shot we have ever attempted. Ten years and counting.
