It’s very difficult to talk about what is happening and will happen as China reasserts control based on economic domination. One of the things that has struck me is the amazing blindness in this country to what that means. I started writing bout it only when I realized that no one else was willing to say what needs to be said. The responses have been interesting but they are usually missing so many pieces of common Asian knowledge that it is hard to figure out what to say or where to start. I finally thought I’ll start the process and see if I can answer the questions and that should give me an idea of what to do with the next part of the story.
Knowing Chinese history is very important because they have a lot of history and they know good deal about it. It is also dangerous because you can see patterns that repeat in very different periods and the modern communist period denounced, formally, most that history. Except they didn’t really because it is a very much a part of the Chinese view of the world. It’s been interesting. I met with the first PRC foreign ministry official back in 1974 who came through after the opening of relations by Nixon. The difference from then to December 2001 when I spent three weeks in China with the governor of Hawaii on a major trade and education mission was stunning. I was representing both the University of Hawaii for technical education and my own IT company and had young Chinese entrepreneurs calling me at all hours and showing up in our hotel. I could see what was going to happen. I also got to know several Communist Party officials as we met with them in every city that we went to. Endless twelve course Chinese meals can get to you after a while.
But the point was that they were coming back and, as everyone knows, China ruled all the parts of the planet that mattered for very long periods of time. Oh well, maybe some people don’t know that. And during those times they made most of the major mistakes that can be made and many of them were made several times. The power of that type of history is very real. The only thing close to it in the west is Rome and, interestingly, that lasted all the way to the 19th century in Byzantium and the Holy Roman Empire, now Germany and Austria. And Berlin is the other rising capital as Washington fades into incompetence. We seen to be returning to our roots on both sides of the planet and I haven’t even gotten into India.
There are a lot of US citizens who are going to be completely lost very soon. They just don’t know it yet. Ignorance is bliss.
