It certainly makes sense from the perspective of political strategy for the Democratic Party to court the people who claim to be religious but what would that really do for the Democratic Party? The party is intellectually and ethically exhausted and seeking to lure the types who would vote for someone like Trump on “religious” grounds simply adds moral bankruptcy to the list of problems.

The intention here is good and laudable so I won’t belabor this but there is nothing to be gained from dealing with a collapsing system. The traditional dyadic oppositions of right/left, religious/atheist are no longer relevant. The majority of the population is looking for validity and change that is not bogged down in petty hatred and ignorance. Religion in America has come to mean petty hatred and ignorance. The accelerating decline in traditional religious affiliation shows that. We need to move on.
