I accidentally saw Peterson in a contentious discussion with a reporter who, I believe, was working on women’s issues. My initial reaction was to be mildly impressed at his refusal to be nailed down on anything other than that everyone was missing his point. He was obviously working at a much higher level than the poor woman interviewing him as she simply didn’t have the skill to match his skill in avoiding here questions. In fact the reason I looked at the interview was because of an article on the errors that she made in the discussion.
In the end I was concerned. I’ve done years of college teaching and public speaking so find a skillful person interesting. Other than a specific issue with refusing to grant people the identity that they preferred there didn’t seem to be much more to him. He could get people excited by telling them the things they wanted to hear so they didn’t have to pay attention to other people and were free to be selfish. The argument over pronouns is a problem with English that should be corrected and will be. Eliminate gendered pronouns and the problem disappears. But this is the kind of thing that is endlessly difficult unless you make the simple change. That is happening.
Peterson, too, will pass.
