There was a time when hope was broad, tall, and deep. The hope that was our guide sought to bring rewards to everyone. Even if the motivation was greed, it included more general wellbeing and expanded opportunities.
The establishment of the modern age with modern nation-states was built on that greater good even if the reality still taught bigotry and exclusion. There were goals of honesty and equality, even if many ignored those goals and a few sneered at them. We all know the weaknesses and failures that we all share. The belief was firm that the principles of representative government would always tap the wellsprings of hope for all.
As wealth expanded, it became evident that all of our institutions were structured with racism and bigotry and held a percentage of the population in servitude. That included multiple communities in every region and every nation. Some nations were much worse than others, and some areas were much worse than others, but the concept of national sovereignty built walls to protect those areas, regions, and nation-states from change.
After a brutal fifty years of world war and mechanized battle against the forces of fascism, a new form of feudal control by fear and conquest, we saw the opportunity and that the old evils must go. But despite decades of work, old bigotries exhausted those who sought the change and were hidden enough to be deniable in polite society but comfortable to joke about in white communities. That was the agreement with an evil that would destroy America.
The continuously growing engines of capitalist development, industry, and the military made the framers of the lousy deal far more prosperous than they had dreamed. All of it taken from those who had accepted something they didn’t need, a vast military empire, and destruction of the planet with the steady loss of their share of what we made.
The population of the American nation-state accepted the deal to look the other way at racism and bigotry while allowing those with significant financial resources to set the rules. They thought jobs would be safe, and everything would stay the way it was when it was good. But the game was changed. Lies began to be used to distract the population that thought they were protected. What was being defended was slowly replaced by empty words that no longer meant freedom and prosperity.
But the big lies of the 20th century worked for any autocratic elite when the only approved goal is greed. The nobility became hereditary, and the managers below them had no choice but to accept privileges and wealth. Debt became the reward for everyone else. And those still repressed had to struggle to get their debt. Membership in the nation-state became a lifetime of debt with the worn hope of a lottery win. Surviving meant goodwill of a small Social Security income and, finally, some medical services but only with expensive supplemental insurance or no medical professional would touch you.
Profits and greed come first. Human life is nothing but buying and consuming until you die. No wonder after almost two hundred years of improvement in life expectancy, the US population began the long slide to an earlier and earlier grave. But that was the deal, and there was none better anywhere. A lie tied to ignorance and the exclusion of say in our lives and communities that says communities are socialism and you don’t want that. No, you might demand what you already own on this planet. That can never be allowed.
This planet and all its resources and assets belong to us all. Too many took the usual deal to prevent others from any gain. But now there may be little or no future. But the tiny elite with the power to control has bought infinite greed as their right. Even the pretense of keeping others from your share is now paper-thin as your only reward.
This tragedy is the shrinkage of hope and expectation. No longer can we share hope for the world and all others, but our shrinking piece, we hear repeatedly, is threatened by everyone. Better to let the police in armor and hate shoot those others in the street, so we are not endangered. Everything is a danger when you know that all you have may not be enough to do more than live in anxiety.
Somehow the great 20th century victories against the forces of fascism and authoritarian rule became the denunciation of any who fight against the new fascist, authoritarian regimes of endless greed and empty lies. The programmed cannot see the absurdity of being told they will have what their parents had by destroying what their parents fought to protect.
Everyone was once antifascist but willing to open opportunities to any who would change. That is still true and very much the ideal of all on this planet. But the old hatred and lies are maintained to allow the corrupt elite to rule, destroy, and oppress with a minority that they manipulate. We see this in the Trump regime and in their favored fascistic rulers who cling to each other to maintain and expand their power. But that is now deadly at a planetary level, and we are out of time.
The old lies are apparent but now they are amplified with the elimination of all emotions except fear and greed. This tragedy will not end with a discussion, and any who say it must are risking our future.
With the incredible noise level of fascist confusion, peaceful demonstrations will not affect those areas controlled by violent and murderous police. They will continue to kill until stopped by the people who have had enough. But we know the regime will foment violence as they have already begun to kill and attack randomly. The response must be controlled, but it must not be powerless. That is surrender to criminal rule.
We need to buy two months to retain the hope of a caretaker, Biden Harris administration. That is all the hope we have. This period cannot be anything, but forces held in check in the face of threat and destruction by the Trump labeled gangs. We must keep the moral heights, but we cannot allow rampages and murder in cities threatened by racist thugs. Those thugs and their supporters are all that Trump has left.
The forces of racist rage and fascist destruction must be contained until all hope is lost. Let’s hope the marshaling of the forces of the people continues to grow in the face of daily outrage. That is the hope that we must not lose.
