Excellent discussion of the social and political dilemma that is destroying the American Experiment. Maintaining the pretense of democratic principles by pushing everything into the form of political debate with religious dogma granted equal status to scientific knowledge was and is a disaster. And I don’t see a way out of this conundrum without completely restructuring the rules of the public dialogue.
Spirituality needs to be separated from traditional religion, science must be given priority in the public sphere. Administration of the planet needs to be rational, scientific, and boring (hopefully). The sphere of opinion and entertainment appears to be virtual and instantaneous. The references to Australian moieties seems a very possible answer. We need a much more sophisticated mix of geographic, administrative, and personal narrative cultural or even kinship forms.
And that is very hard.
