Direct Democracy by Default
by Mike Meyer ~ Honolulu ~ April 21, 2021
It is hard to watch a person attempting their best in a situation where that best is no longer relevant. There may be many reasons for this, but we have a surfeit of them in America of the mid 21st century.
These are the tragic preparations for traveling on a ship that has already sailed and sunk. It is not only too late but is now embarrassingly morbid as if we are celebrating a present being given to someone who has just died.
This is hard for everyone as we do not want to slight the intent and effort expended by the person struggling to recover something already permanently lost. I think this as I watch Joe Biden attempting in his own way to both restore the America of the mid 20th century and correct sixty years of social failure.
Even if he succeeded against all odds, it wouldn't matter as no one would want it. The desired restoration would produce the national equivalent of the Hotel California. “We haven’t had that spirit here since 1969. . . You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.” The outcome would complete the destruction of a cherished memory.
At the personal level, this is the old truth that you can never go home again. There is nothing left but bittersweet disappointment. The mistakes that we made can never be undone.
But we are not in such a simple world as the cliched home to which we can never return. The place that Biden is endeavoring to enable has become deadly for all of us. The materialistic culture, late-stage capitalist economics, social amnesia, and unquestioned racism have metastasized into a planet and species-killing miasma.
Our new paradigmatic reality is dictated by our ability to identify, excise, and destroy those things that are killing us. Biden and the other establishment leaders are caught in denial of reality. You cannot repair what must be killed to survive. The first step is to clearly determine exactly what must be removed and replaced before you can identify what can be rebuilt or repaired.
That is difficult, if not impossible, when you are being controlled by the disease destroying you. In America and other troubled nation-states, we no longer have enough distance, calmness, or perspective to do that. So the deluded continue to plan repairs that are hopeless.
The process of identifying what must be excised and removed has been developing for decades but without formal acknowledgment or support. Token political gestures could at many stages have been adopted as reality but were not to protect the elites that fed on our societies. That is the ship that has now long since sailed and sank.
While the aging and less educated segments of America are a clear problem, they are fading steadily away. The structural political damage in America that has enabled minority governments is being escalated to hold on to the cancerous past. That is self-destructive and will fail.
The question is whether we can delay that population’s intentional self-destruction until they whither demographically or if they must be isolated and controlled. The alternatives end the same way but only the quantity of suffering changes.
Biden’s desperate attempt to maintain a terminal past is being torn apart by the popular democratic forces. The majority of the population is now acting directly on the most diseased social and cultural components.
We must remove racism and the structural supports for racism that is the police system in America. Biden will become increasingly irrelevant on this as he cannot see what the younger majority can see. He will be constantly be driven to act by the people refusing to tolerate delusion.
It would appear that Biden realizes that he needs to respond to the direct demands of the majority that have been thwarted by years of corrupt minority rule. That he is willing to act is positive, but it also explains his embarrassing failures to act and instead reverts to elements of the old paradigm that is irrelevant.
This is a way to direct democracy but not by leadership. That is positive. America has failed miserably for decades with regressive leadership. The people in politics are not up to what is needed now. We must push them where they need to go.
