“Clinton is so damn close . . .” is exactly what makes this so frightening. She could do most of what we need dependent upon taking back at least the Senate. But she could also remain firmly fixed in the neoliberal status quo as her theme suggests. For many years we have had basically one party with fireworks on social issues used to distract the troublesome masses. But, whatever happens, the GOP is dead. With a Trump loss there won’t be anything left but a white nationalist fringe and a whole bunch of neoliberal conservatives looking for a home. It could be difficult for Hilary not to be pulled into converting the democratic party into a neoliberal conservative, socially moderate party of the status quo. The upside of this would be creation of a democratic socialist space for Bernie (and Warren?) to build something very new. Ok, probably won’t happen but something must happen because this thing is broken and we are all hung between fear and dread.
