Can the Evil be Contained?
by Mike Meyer ~ Honolulu ~ June 19, 2020
While we are experiencing a Sudden Paradigmatic Change that is suddenly bringing hope and inspiring significant social evolution, we are facing the violent collapse of the lead nation-state of the 20th century. And it is going down in flames, pain, disease, and suffering.
The price we, in the US, are paying is ignominious death by irony driven by absurdity. The potential for a new social design brought on by the Floyd demonstrations echoing planetwide while Black communities work to take control of their neighborhoods is threatened by complete nation-state failure amid vast wealth. The death toll is rising rapidly from COVID-19 while stupidity rules.
I try to understand the process of change we are experiencing to clarify how this can improve human society while giving us hope of surviving our most significant threat, the Climate Crisis. But we need to look directly in the face of failure and, now, insanity that is devastating what was once a troubled but honest attempt at building a truly equitable society.
Looking at America’s reality in June 2020 and not running screaming for shelter can happen because we know that there is no shelter. The successful and even moderately successful nation-states of planet Earth are watching with ever-growing horror at our abject failure. We have given up and are accepting death.
The complete incompetence of the Trump/Republican regime means, now, the death of at least 140,000 people by the end of July and 200,000 people by this autumn. The number of deaths beyond that is impossible even to estimate now but, perhaps, 500,000?
These are not deaths by an act of nature in a vast earthquake or tsunami, but deaths by government incompetency a complete and willful denial of reality. The fact that Trump is both massively ignorant and mentally ill removes even the primitive satisfaction of making him suffer in isolation for these acts. Indeed, he cannot understand what he has caused.
And, yet, there is no adequate anger stemming from the remorse of those people in positions of power which allowed this person and those opportunists feeding on the tragedy even to attempt to remove cause uncontrolled disaster. But this, exactly, is the reason for careful observation, mindfulness, and hope for new leadership in our societies. The forces of change and the forces of destruction are coming together.
I see a large, malignant blockage in the way of life and a rapidly accelerating force for change, and survival, about to collide. There is no way to know what combination of events will trigger the collision, but it does not look as if this can be avoided. All I can do is look at the forces in motion.
The US has the highest death rate of any advanced state but has never managed even to produce a plan beyond whatever state governments could manage to do to bring the pandemic under control. While the first Asian and European and Pacific states have achieved control in the first wave of the disease, allowing them to ease restrictions, the US wildly began opening while the numbers of infected were still rising. States and metropolitan areas that have struggled to implement the apparent countermeasures are now viciously attacked by the federal government and the worst of the state governments to force them into openly spreading the deadly pandemic.
The implications of this were widely announced by medical and public health professionals earning mockery for doing so. The premature openings in May would produce an explosion of new cases in place still very much in the first wave of the pandemic. By the end of June, the disease would be growing out of control in those states. That is now happening, but the mindless and pandering government officials are demanding faster openings and a return to normal in July.
July will now see the inevitable explosion of deaths overwhelming district medial facilities. Forced return to required masks in public and the beginning of shutdowns in the worst-hit areas has already begun while deluded populations are rushing to bars and restaurants to party in celebration of their freedom. Deaths, they are being told, only affect the old and the unwanted minorities.
But most people know what is happening and want nothing to do with it. All of us are caught in the rush to open for survival even though that is a disaster.
Part of this is what drove a widely diverse mix of the majority that still has a grip on reality to support and continue to support the Floyd demonstrations. Demands for police reform, the need to care for all people caught in the pandemic, and the requests for reversal of decades of predatory capitalist destruction of the atmosphere, are all mixed into this human brew.
The hatred, racist attacks, and risk of public violence come from the forces behind Trump or those willing to attach their hatred to his desire for loot and destruction. Sanity is being preserved by diverse communities who have watched this develop and understand what is happening. They are working in any way possible against the growing panic of the fascist and neo-Nazi gangs. Trump and the Republicans now openly encourage violence and blatantly display Nazi symbols to inspire their followers.
The lines are becoming apparent, and it is the people against the racist and fascist hordes. The core of billionaires supporting Trump cares nothing for these things considering themselves able to protect gated communities and homes while isolating themselves from the pandemic. Those are seriously stupid ideas, but billionaires usually not too bright. Having inherited great wealth or stolen it, sometimes by accident, you can’t expect anything of value from them.
My crystal ball has never worked well, but serious study and analysis tell me this is going to explode. The psychological shock of a forced return to shelter in place with, now, no money and the stunning realization that people have been played as suckers by their leaders is the most volatile mix I have seen in my life in this country. I am old enough to have been in the Vietnam war and what comes to mind is the fall of Saigon.
The fall of Saigon is not a direct match. Still, my gut tells me that the level of social chaos, moral failure, fear, and violent anger at being lied to, used, and abandoned is going to erupt across America in the coming days or weeks. It may be on June 20 in Tulsa, or it may explode somewhere else, but national leadership has completely failed.
Stay inside and stay safe. With luck, our black and minority communities may be able to pick up the pieces or at least give us examples of how to replace the failed social structures. It is small, but the Seattle CHAZ is a small piece of hope. But the sheer volume of psychological propaganda fed by the Republican- Fox machine supported by Russian military intelligence seeking destruction in America will continue to manipulate millions.
There is hope, and the rats are deserting the sinking ship and suddenly finding their voices to say that all that was known is true. But that is just another source of fuel for whatever explodes. Let’s hope that the national majority tired of lies and insanity will hold and opt for health and safety. I think that is that will stop the conflagration.
