Things have changed again. On one level, they are much cleaner and easier to understand, but behind that, the complexity has grown exponentially. No one is going to escape this cascading disaster without profound disruption.
At the top level for everyone on the planet, it is easier because Trump and company have abdicated all authority. This abdication was well stated by Robert Reich, Secretary of Labor, under Obama. Trump is no longer president. We have a powerless, delusional racist hiding in the White House bunker or tweeting wild threats and inciting death and destruction to his enemies. The good thing is that he can’t tweet from the bunker, so we can hope he spends more time there to lessen the damage he causes.
So much for the good news. We now have a national police riot destroying minority neighborhoods across the country. At the same time, we have some polices forces, and many individuals officers appalled at what has been happening and joining the black-led protests. It is impossible to hide the nature of this racist rioting with phones recording everything, including vicious attacks on residents, bystanders, and older men with canes.
At the same time, we have the full range of people supporting the black and minority communities at high risk to themselves. Behind that are worldwide support demonstrations and indictment of the fascist and racist police and their cowardly officials. These blatant abuses are bringing all people into the fight to, finally, end and remove racism, bigotry, and xenophobic oppression.
The complex interweaves of good, not so good, and wrong is the playground of the forces of conspiracy and disinformation. But that is now different. I’m not sure how to describe it, but the black lives matter movement, despite blackface wearing white supremacists and all the other usual evil, is now leading us to what we need.
These demonstrations are not a minority demanding rights, that did not work in the US, but part of our population who have had enough and are taking leadership into their hands for us all. Those of us who are white and privileged can feel the difference. It is time for the privileged white world to learn to be silent and to follow those who are leading.
We know that the world was transforming before our eyes for years, but COVID-19 kicked the legs out from under the aging, white abusers who have refused to change their ways. The people who put their greed above the lives of people who have no choice but to work in a pandemic was, definitely now, a bridge too far.
The justifications for refusing to support everyone amid a pandemic while forcing ‘openings’ that are stupid and will lead to thousands of more deaths will bring chaos. The majority of the people everywhere are aware of this stupidity and are refusing to participate if they can afford to do so.
It is just that those who are least able to afford this after decades and centuries of white abuse are the ones that will lead the change. This force of black leadership is the difference that is hard for people to grasp but emotionally apparent to all. It is time for this to happen.
Even minimal knowledge of this pandemic and pandemic history of how these things recycle through different populations with the climate crisis as an underlying cause is enough to know that the past is gone. We need new leadership, as we are all facing brutalization and hardship. Attempting to play racism and xenophobia in a century of growing crisis will destroy all the rich, old, white people and us too.
We need to control this, but let it do what it must. Protecting the lives of people comes first. Uniting behind that in the face of crude, fascist, and neo-nazi evil will help bring us through this so we can work to save our environment and our diverse societies. Property and vast piles of things we don’t need are not worth protecting. They belong to the people who have always paid the price for their production. That is a lesson of this pandemic, but there are those in positions of power who will not learn. That lesson is being brought home to them now.
