Allowing the fear of being replaced to dominate a profession accelerates the elimination of that profession. Professional conservatism in past eras was a valuable counter to sort term trends that required time to mature or to prove themselves seriously flawed. The paradigmatic changes that we are experiencing are replacing that validation process with a very different process based on quick, mass collaboration.

Failure to subject your thinking to that newer and moor extensive process means you will be replaced by people, usually younger, who do. This is a particularly large disaster in higher education. The assumption that you can ignore the digital world in both active thought and research but also in teaching has punched a hole in the boat. The obvious result is students abandoning ship. They are being picked up by small, fast transportation that can take them directly where they want to go now.

What is perceived as a problem is actually a solution. In the new environment this will be explained to you.
