Ah, the secret has been revealed. Evolutionary success is a numbers game balancing stability versus the risk of change with enough originality for an occasional moonshot. Incremental change takes care of environmental evolution and the moonshots kill only a few colonies and tremendously reward one now and then. Fortunately we invented ‘free will’ that allows us to think that we are being original by doing exactly what everyone else is doing.
Our species hit it lucky on some moonshots, language, agriculture, and digital technology that may let us leverage a wider range of incremental change and more moonshots. This, however, appears to have made the ‘conservative’ path impossible to follow in its traditional form as necessary incremental changes for environmental survival have sped up.
Ants haven’t yet hit this problem. We may not survive it.
